The Pilgrim's Sail is a tradition in Ragunna, enforced by the Order of the Deep.

Archive Entry[]

Those deemed faithless by the Order of the Deep are sent to voyage upon the Pilgrim's Sail, following the ancient path of those who once braved the mist and maelstrom seeking the Sentinel's guidance.

The Order claims that only Imperator can grant absolution to these transgressors. They must endure a grueling pilgrimage, suffering both body and soul until their repentance is complete. At the journey's end, it is said Sentinel Imperator will offer them forgiveness and promise of new life.

But no one in Ragunna has ever heard of a faithless "pilgrim" returning from this sacred journey. The Order asserts that they reach Imperator's place of dwelling and devote themselves to Their service for eternity. While many still harbor doubts, few dare to openly challenge the Order- none wish to suffer the same tragic fate as those branded Fools.

Overview[]

The tradition of the Pilgrim's Sail was born from a legend of how Imperator's most devout believer, moved by Their grace, braved storms and mists to find the Sentinel— reaching the once sacred island that is now known as Penitent's End. As the current Primus of Ragunna, Fenrico claimed to have uncovered the path that leads to a place by the Sentinel's side, where They impart Their teachings to mortals. [1]

For a time the Pilgrim's Sail was a great honor among the people for only the most devout worshipers of Imperator despite their great financial cost they imposed through taxes though despite this "vanishingly few" pilgrims would return from these. For a time the Primus Fenrico would cease these large-scale pilgrimages and they would become "a relic of the past" with the burdensome taxes also being lifted. At some point after this however for reasons unknown Fenrico would reinstitute the Pilgrimage as a punishment for "fools" instead of a willing honor, these new pilgrimages would lack the expense of the past and instead be run-down and of poor quality gaining the nickname "Fool's Sail" from the people.[2]

Contrary to the Order's claims, those who are branded Fools and forced to embark on the pilgrimage do not truly find Imperator on Penitent's End Island, but instead a once sacred land that has been corrupted by the Dark Tide. Those who survive the initial shipwreck risk being killed by Tacet Discord, and upon reaching their intended destination, they face the Dragon of Dirge. Under the Order's control, the dragon attacks all living beings, including humans. To keep the dragon's existence a secret, entry to Penitent's End Island has been forbidden by the Order.

The Troupe of Fools is made up of survivors of the Pilgrim's Sail, founded by Brant after surviving the pilgrimage as a child, and seeks to rescue others who land on the island. They have built a refuge in an underground cavern on the island, called Fool's Elysium, and hope to one day expose the Order's lies through a grand performance at the Carnevale.

Due to the long history of division and holy war in the land, which led to the Dark Tide, Fenrico believes that in order to achieve true unity, it is necessary to immediately root out anyone who questions or fails to conform to doctrine.

The Pilgrim's Sail has seemingly been stopped as a punishment by Fenrico after Rover became the Laureate of the latest Carnevale.[3]
